I’ve split up dating into categories based on how you’d interact on a regular date: Having a Drink, Having a Conversation, Sitting Back and Relaxing, and Date Night. Not all dating categories are for everyone, and when you feel ready for your next date, you’ll figure out which category works best for you. And if you find yourself in a restaurant or bar, and you’re looking for someone to chat with or just vent to—well, the winner is the category you’re in, of course.
Once you’ve mastered navigating a date, you can test your skills on your friends, so tell your friends you’re going on a date and see which category they gravitate toward. I got to know a friend of mine well over a year before we started dating. I would’ve been happy if we’d just become friends, but she, at least consciously, wanted to see where the relationship could go.
This is going to be a long post, but it’s well worth the effort. If you read through the entire thing, I’ll feel like I did a good job. As someone who’s been on all the categories that I’ll discuss, I’m going to give you my best advice and my opinions based on my experiences and observations. It doesn’t matter which category you choose—just choose one. Once you’ve decided what category you like best, you’ll be able to navigate dating much more easily. So, let’s begin.
Having a Drink.
The big daddy of the categories, this one can be a bit scary if you’re not used to it. When my friend and I went on our first date, I wasn’t going to have a drink unless it was at a dinner party or something fancy. I was in way over my head. I got super nervous and I was filled with self-doubt. Let me tell you: I had no reason to be nervous. He was a cute guy, his apartment was nice, and we talked for hours. He was my perfect date. Things started off a little weird, but once we got to know each other more, it was a perfect night. We started drinking together and just enjoyed each other’s company.
But can you really go on a date without a drink? Of course you can. But it’s going to be a lot harder. If you’re nervous, it’s going to be extra hard. 1. Pick the best dating sites in your area.
Assuming your area has a large number of people, you should know who they are. And in an age where the internet is a cornucopia of potential dates, your best strategy is to find people and filter them down to their physical attractions. Sites like Chatroulette, OkCupid, and Tinder don’t just give you a potential mate or a way to check out someone’s profile (even if you don’t go full-tilt on a first date), they have a social element to them, making it easier to judge who would be a good match for you.

2. Use a dating site that has a lot of options.
Don’t settle for what’s out there, and don’t be afraid to keep trying until you find your potential match. The more options, the better. There are plenty of singles in a city with a large number of people in it, and by broadening your search, you’re more likely to find someone who is a good match.
3. Use a dating site that’s a bit more custom.
Not all dating sites are made equal. There are a number of free sites that are perfect for checking out a lot of profiles, but if you’re looking for a guy who lives near you, you’re going to need to pay for a premium subscription—usually a yearly cost. Sites that boast an iPhone or Android app are a great addition too: Not only does the app make it easier for you to browse different cities, but most sites have a section where you can see who’s near you.
4. Be up front about what you look for in a partner.
If a guy doesn’t seem like a good match,
