I need a way to get the hostname of the machine I am working on in c# (e.g. contoso.com)
I’ve been trying to use System.Net.Dns but get either of this errors
System.Net.Dns.ResolvException: No such host is known
System.Net.Dns.ResolvException: There was no address associated with the hostname
and for some reason the program seems to hang.
I need this since I need to pass the hostname to my server. I know how to do it in java but I need a working solution in C#.
(Windows Server 2008 in case that matters)

@MattBittner I would agree with you that this is a security measure. Just trying to get the machine name is best done through the operating system. However, you might be able to use the SID of the machine rather than the host name.
You can do this using the following line of code:
string s = System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().User.Name;
I know this returns a Windows user that is running the process, but I think this will at least get you part of the way. If you need the domain you will have to use the WMI query, which is very complicated in C#.
