A picture is worth a thousand words, but a picture of a picture is worth a million. A layered Photoshop file is like a journal entry for a particular image, except it is an infinitely more dynamic, powerful way of storing and making changes to an image. This chapter is about navigating in the layers of a Photoshop file to be able to manipulate and change the appearance of the photo’s layers at will.
Finding Your Photoshop File
To be able to edit and change any part of a photo, you first have to find the Photoshop document that contains that part of the photo.
You can display the layers within a Photoshop document by opening an image in the Layers palette on the right side of the Photoshop window. On a Mac, choose View ⇒ Layers, or double-click the Layers button. On Windows, choose View ⇒ Layers or open the Layers palette.
As you can see in Figure 5-1, the Layers palette lists each layer that is open. You can zoom in to see the content of a particular layer, and you can see whether the layer is open or closed (saturated with a black background).

Photoshop projects are often arranged into folders according to topic or location. Open Photoshop and go to the Windows Explorer window (if you use a Windows computer). Create a folder that you can share among your projects for ease of accessing and working with images. Make sure that this folder is always on your hard drive and not on a portable device.
The open files are represented by folders as well. If you open a project folder and then click the folder, it expands to show the folders that it contains. The contents of these folders are the files in the folder.

After you find the Photoshop file that you want to open, you need to make sure it’s the active document. To do so, click the Open Files button (found at the bottom of the window) and choose Open Documents. This action opens your project folder and opens the Photoshop file that contains your image in which you want to work.
