Patients with CD had a mean +/- SE colonic transit time (125.5 +/- 20.0 hours) that was significantly longer than that of the UC (86.4 +/- 17.5 hours, p < 0.001) and control (89.8 +/- 22.4 hours, p = 0.04) groups. The mean +/- SE emptying times of the proximal colon, distal colon, terminal ileum, and stool were similar among the 3 groups. There were no correlations between colonic transit times and disease activity in the CD group, but there was a strong negative correlation in the UC group (M.E.S, r = -0.70, p < 0.002).
