The Lazy Z Ranch is a small ranch in Floyd County, Texas, owned by Jan Legebokoff, a veterinarian and former rodeo cowboy. Its namesake refers to the Zs appearing on many of its ranch maps, as the letters Z and L were often used to designate watering spots and land tenements. The ranch is a property, with a one-story house of and a tenant house.
Geography
The ranch is located in the southeastern corner of the state, at an altitude of. It is bordered to the northeast by the Brazos River, to the south by Longhorn Creek, and to the west by a small branch of the Red River. The ranch is in a section of Floyd County known as the Chappell Hill, which includes the San Angelo National Wildlife Refuge and Chappell Hill State Park, both of which lie to the northeast. Texas State Highway 385 traverses the middle of the property, running north–south from Highland to Sattler.
History
The ranch was purchased in September 1934, two years before the founding of the Texas Rangers, as part of an effort to break the Ranger Rangers’ monopoly over law enforcement in that part of the state. Initially, it was used for stud service to the Ray Hall ranch (Brazos Valley Stud Service in High-Barrier/Cadillac Quarter Horse Country), then for overflow housing for the ranch. The building of the Lazy Z Ranch house in 1938 is attributed to its convenient location, which was also an advantage during the Texas oil boom of the 1930s. The Lazy Z name is also a nod to the ranch’s function as a watering stop on the way to deer hunting in Chappell Hill.
