[TOKYO] Trade talks between the two largest economies resumed today in the US, with a focus on issues such as agriculture and industrial policies.
The two sides also discussed the free trade deal between the US and 11 of its allies and Japan, including Canada, in a separate trade negotiations meeting, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said.
The talks, which started on Monday, are being conducted in two phases – an economic talks phase and a political phase.
A sharp fall in the yen since July has helped lure Japanese exporters, but the current government is also pressing to tighten its fiscal policy.
“The trade talks will be completed in a good atmosphere if we can reach a consensus on these issues,” said Kishida.
His counterpart, John Kerry, said the discussions would cover a variety of trade issues, including high tariffs and other barriers on Japanese products.
