A draft version of AutoCAD was first demonstrated to the public in April 1982 at the SIGGRAPH conference by David Garlan of Autodesk, who presented AutoCAD’s basic functionality at a time when desktop publishing was not yet a common concept.[3] Garlan estimated that it would cost between $5,000 and $10,000 to license AutoCAD for use on a desktop.[3] Autodesk CEO Carl Bass sold Autodesk to Microsoft in 2002 for approximately $400 million.
In June 1992, Autodesk released AutoCAD 5.0, which was based on a new, object-oriented programming model for the first time. This resulted in a dramatic increase in speed.[4] In December 1994, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD LT, a new version for the low-cost market. The introduction of these products coincided with the introduction of Windows NT, which made possible a new generation of affordable computers. The first licensed release of AutoCAD LT came in the spring of 1995. AutoCAD LT featured many new features, including a streamlined user interface, a 2D drawing area, a block library for developing non-overlapping layers, and a command-line interface. A 1.0 version of AutoCAD LT came out in the fall of 1996, and 3.0 in the fall of 1997.[4]
