A CAD program was needed for designers who were required to visualize drawings of complex shapes and layouts. The term “computer-aided design” (“CAD”) was coined by MIT CAD specialist, Sy Willensky, after he learned how to write a computer program that would generate the drawings. Willensky and his team started development of a program, which they called Draw, in 1967 and received its first release on June 20, 1968. Although the name was changed to AutoCAD later on, the program did not become commercially available until years later.
AutoCAD went through a series of major changes and improvements in its history, including versions for the Apple II, the Windows, and the DOS operating systems. AutoCAD’s most important feature is the parametric dimensioning, which lets the user create a two-dimensional drawing directly from a 3D model.

The main features in AutoCAD include 2D drafting, 3D modeling and animation, drawing aids, CAD document management, graphics, and various other advanced features. With its software architecture, AutoCAD offers multiple “WYSIWYG” (what you see is what you get) interfaces for both editing and viewing of drawings.
Standard system fonts in AutoCAD include Arial, Times, and Comic Sans MS, among others. Arial is the default system font in the Microsoft Windows operating system. Other options include the Narrow and Wide styles in the Windows Vista operating system.
There are two methods to install and use AutoCAD. A “Ribbon,” which is found in the ribbon bar of the application window, is used to select objects and functions. This method of selection is also known as the “Wizard” method. The other method is to use the pull down menu on the ribbon to select an object or function. This method is referred to as the “Shortcut” method. Using the “Ribbon” method is recommended, since it is more flexible and simpler to use. Using the menu requires you to memorize the names of the functions.

The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1985, and was called AutoCAD I. It was not available on the Apple Macintosh platform. AutoCAD II, released in 1990, was the first version to support a Macintosh platform.
In 1993, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD LT, a more affordable version of AutoCAD, with the same capabilities as AutoCAD. This version was originally for the Apple Macintosh platform, but was ported to Windows in 1999. By the early 2000s, AutoCAD LT was receiving a major upgrade. The first major upgrade was in 2001, when AutoCAD LT received X-ref functionality. In 2003, an upgrade to X-ref functionality was released, which renamed X-ref to Xref. In 2007, AutoCAD LT/Xref 2.0 was renamed AutoCAD LT 2007. AutoCAD LT 2007 was renamed AutoCAD 2009 in 2008, and AutoCAD 2010 in 2011.
In 2012, AutoCAD 2010 was released. AutoCAD 2010 brought major new features to the product, including DFX for 3D objects and the ability to link and share, via a cloud-based Autodesk Sync Platform, via mobile devices. This release also introduced the ability to export to the Web. AutoCAD 2010 was renamed to AutoCAD 2011. AutoCAD 2012, released in late 2012, brought a number of new features to the product. This release features the ability to use forms to create user-friendly drawings, and a searchable database feature. AutoCAD 2013, released in 2014, was an upgrade of AutoCAD 2012. The 2013 release featured a new user interface for AutoCAD, which was inspired by 3D modeling tools.
