AutoCAD History

The AutoCAD story begins with Dr. Barry (later Barry) Smith, a senior technical writer for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). He was given an early version of AutoCAD by his friend, system administrator, and programmer David Williams. The very first release of AutoCAD was on January 26, 1982, and the first run of 100 copies was created at NCAR with funds provided by the National Science Foundation.
