I want to do this using ggplot2/geom_tile and I have a column in my data frame that is a factor like this:
Date Time of Bloom
1 8/7/2002 2:53 PM 1
2 8/8/2002 1:30 AM 1
3 9/2/2002 7:36 PM 1
4 9/7/2002 5:28 PM 1
5 9/10/2002 8:58 AM 1
6 9/13/2002 3:04 PM 1

So I would like to plot this using the Time of Bloom factor, but I can’t figure out how to do this without a column for each factor value. Any help is appreciated!

A:

If you must have a column for each value, you can use geom_tile_2d() to do this with boxplot():
ggplot(d, aes(x = factor(TimeOfBloom), y = value, fill = TimeOfBloom)) +
geom_boxplot(outlier.size = 1) +
theme(axis.ticks.x = element_blank(),
axis.text.x = element_blank()) +
geom_tile_2d() +
scale_fill_continuous(low = “white”, high = “yellow”)
