Does hooking up with one more person mean you’re somehow “breaking” your virginity? “No,” says Lynne Volkman, MD, co-founder of Teen Health Freak. “Having sex for the first time doesn’t feel the same as every other time you’ve had sex in your life.” The good news? Being a “virgin” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
But should you even be looking for a “casual fling” with a new partner? According to Volkman, it totally depends on your goals. “There is nothing wrong with casual sex or having it on the side. You just have to be honest with yourself and others,” she says. But if you want to have sex with someone regularly, you should start thinking about how that kind of relationship can benefit you. “You are not using them to feel good,” she says. “You are using them because they are there. You’re setting it up to get to know them and know what works for you.”
Volkman also adds that you should take time to know what you like and don’t like — which is the best way to ensure you’re getting the most out of a sexual encounter, she says. She adds that, for women, “Having more than one partner means you’re growing in a way that creates new connections,” which leads to more trust.
This is because casual sex does give you a fresh piece of the puzzle, and if you’re open to seeing where that might lead, Volkman says it can actually be quite safe. The process allows you to explore who you really are, which is an essential part of any healthy, stable relationship. “You don’t have to walk into a relationship and buy all your clothes at the same time,” she says. “You have time to shop.”
Also, if you’re seeing your partner more frequently, you’ll be building up trust and intimacy, which means you can get to know one another as a person before taking things further.
It’s the same case with your motivations. If you’re getting into casual sex so you can have fun and find someone to “have adventures” with, consider moving that to the top of the priority list. The whole point of the experience is to have a little fun and a little intimacy, which you should keep in mind as you’re choosing where to go and how to proceed.
