AutoCAD is a commercial product (i.e. not open source) developed and marketed by Autodesk. The first version was released for Microsoft Windows on December 17, 1982 as AutoCAD 1.0. Today the latest major release is AutoCAD 2020.
History
Autodesk acquired a company called Design International in 1991. A CAD and drafting company, Design International had developed the original AutoCAD product. The company, however, was only able to produce enough money to sustain the business for a year, after which it was forced to shut down. Autodesk decided to take over the product, retaining the same name and continuing to produce a similar but new product. The company renamed AutoCAD (pronounced “aut-oh-cad”) to AutoCAD Software for Deltagraph.
AutoCAD began being sold by Autodesk in 1995. The software was released for Microsoft Windows (and UNIX) and Apple Macintosh in the early 1990s. The first CAD software to be released for UNIX was CATIA V2, released in 1987. In 1996, the Macintosh version was expanded to become AutoCAD LT. The first release of AutoCAD was for the Macintosh as AutoCAD 1.0. It was an AutoCAD Drawing Edition with a text-based interface and an AutoCAD Drawing Studio, a drawing creation tool. After a few months of release, Autodesk began offering the program to CAD professionals in major metropolitan areas for $30,000. The price was less than the company’s lowest priced model and still far more than the commercial-grade programs for the same price available at the time.

In 1998 Autodesk introduced the first beta version of AutoCAD; a major step in the development of the program was the addition of 3D modeling. In 1999 Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000, the first version of AutoCAD to run on Windows NT, which made the program available to other Windows operating systems and to the Macintosh. The next year the program was updated with the addition of a more robust text-based menu system and a professional user interface. In the summer of 2001 Autodesk released AutoCAD 2004 for Windows NT. This version also introduced 64-bit architecture, a new graphic and rendering engine, and enhanced drawing tools.

Since Version 2011 a new BI product from Autodesk is running. It is called Autodesk LiveBI. Autodesk LiveBI is a stand-alone software that can be used by any software to process data. The company claimed that this was their first attempt to provide a business intelligence application. It was announced on September 17, 2012 at a keynote address by Autodesk CEO John Kildow.
