The use of multiple mold segments to form a single cavity or mold is known. For example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,709,874 and 5,909,899, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference, describe a method and apparatus in which two segments of a mold having a molding cavity are provided with a clamping surface facing one another. During casting, the mold segments are clamped together in order to prevent the material to be cast from being expelled. The clamping surfaces are in contact with one another. Once the casting operation is over, the segments of the mold are separated from one another and the cast piece or parts are removed from the mold. The casting operation and the separating operation are carried out in such a manner that the cast piece or parts or a part of the mold can remain in the segments of the mold without being damaged or chipped. After separating the segments, the mold segments remain in the casting mold.
While this technique has a number of advantages, the clamping together of the segments to create a single mold cavity can also result in production of material deposits on the clamping surfaces of the mold segments. These deposits must be removed from the mold segments in order to be able to reuse the mold segments for casting a second part. To this end, various cleaning or removal methods and devices have been developed.
U.S. Pat. No. 5,909,899 discloses the use of an extractor to clean the clamping surface. The extractor is moved along the casting surface. The extractor extends outwards from the segment and presses the casting against the casting surface in order to remove material deposits therefrom.
