Introduction

Autodesk AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application, initially developed by Autodesk and first released in December 1982 for the Apple II, Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64, IBM PC and MS-DOS platforms. It was the first commercially released CAD application for microcomputers, with the earliest applications written on the Apple II. It was also the first commercial CAD application for personal computers to make use of a graphics pipeline, for rendering two-dimensional, vector-based images on a video display device. Other CAD applications for personal computers were written before AutoCAD was released, such as Snap! and Interact, but were either stand-alone applications (with no pipeline) or had not been released as a commercial product when AutoCAD was released.

The earliest versions of AutoCAD were published under the name “Drawing Board” in Apple II disk packs with text, graphics and two drawing programs, “Planner” and “Shape”. The original home computer versions of AutoCAD were only text-based, with no graphics support or the capability to draw in any dimension or to add features such as layers, objects, constraints, dimension styles, or text styles.

Developed by Autodesk, AutoCAD is also available as a web app.

Introduction and early versions

AutoCAD made use of a graphics pipeline. Initially, the graphics pipeline featured a hardware-based object-position buffer to store the objects displayed by the drawing program, which was used in the background to calculate and store the path(s) of a newly drawn or redrawn object. Such a buffer was also used when the user moved a displayed object with the cursor.

The Apple II was the first computer with a graphical display unit (graphics card) that was capable of running AutoCAD. AutoCAD was originally sold for the Apple II only.

VBA programming
In the 1990s, developers created “VBA macros” for AutoCAD that were run from within AutoCAD and which allowed users to automate repetitive tasks within the program. These can now be run from Microsoft Excel. However, one of the drawbacks of VBA was that it is not compatible with the latest AutoCAD releases.

VBA-based programs were the leading area of AutoCAD development during the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2003, the VBA development effort was discontinued, and AutoLISP was adopted as a primary development language for AutoCAD. In 2015, the first AutoCAD Add-On app was created, based on VBA, but it was discontinued a year later.

Autodesk Exchange
AutoCAD includes Autodesk Exchange (AWE), a service for sharing drawing information through the internet. Through AWE, users can connect to the internet and browse, upload, and download files from other users on the internet. Files that are uploaded are made available to other registered users with AutoCAD. AutoCAD Architecture includes the ability to access AWE from within the drawing environment.
