i used apple logic pro 8 and got it to work on a mac pro. took me 4 hours. im new to protools but ive heard good things about it. i have a macbook pro 17” which i use as a standalone recorder too. im slowly changing over to using logic pro as well as garageband for recording ideas. ive got a tascam dm-3200 daw mixer, dm-mx 880 mic pre, focusrite scarlett 2i2 studio interface, rode wireless handheld mic, korg nanokontrol and a few other things. im still trying to figure out how to get logic pro to run under os x. i cant find much info on the net about it.

well lets take a look at the studio one user guide. the one thing you must know about protools is that it has been around a long time. there are some great online tutorials and these videos are great to watch. the ones i have watched are:

hi! i’ve been hearing about cubase since i’ve been in highschool. i love the way it’s not just a sequencer but also a daw. i had a friend who used cubase and that’s how i first became interested in the program. i ended up downloading it on my computer and i’ve been using it for a few years now. it’s really good for all of the different things i’ve ever wanted to be able to do in music. i’ve used different daws in the past, logic, cubase, fl studio, but my friend said cubase is the best daw ever. have you used it? do you think it’s a good program?

kudos for actually creating your own album. i’ve been looking at it for a while now, and i’ve been struggling with making the switch. i’ve been working with cubase for over 10 years now, and it’s one of the few music software that i actually like. i’ve also made a number of albums in reason, and tried out ableton live. i’m currently using cubase 8.5 (i’ve been a little spoiled by the ease of use on this, but i’m also guilty of choosing simple tools to accomplish complex tasks. i’d recommend the cubase 6 or 7 version for a beginner because of the simplicity in the interface and the ease of use. reason is something of a middle ground, and it’s not a bad program but it’s not the greatest program around either. ableton live is just a nightmare to use.

i’m glad to see that you are considering reasons to run a daw other than “just because you can” and that reasons for making a purchase like this should be considered as well as how much you plan to spend on this in the first place. the best “ready-made” software already exists and it is working well for me as well as for a lot of other people that i know personally. the people who are using pro tools aren’t obviously not all very good musicians, but that’s not actually the main reason why they spend a lot of time having to use all the features within pro tools because they’re not all that good at music – they’re probably not that skilled at music in general either. pro tools is, however, very good at being a very good tool for many types of musicians, and pro tools and logic are just about the only two that i find to be “ready-made” in the sense that the tools are “complete” in terms of software functions within their product, which means that they don’t need to go anywhere else, which makes their products rather more expensive than other, less complete, solutions, if you see what i mean.
i’m using fl studio. i’ve been following your site for years. i just started playing piano. i agree with you, it has a lot of power. i feel like it is comparable to pro tools. it would be nice to have ableton live included with this, but you have to add all the plugins manually. it doesn’t have a place to host. you can make a template and save, but is there a way to do it more easily?
ableton sounds better to me than any other at home. some combination of my little laptop and kick the drum kit. the way i do it, every time i make a record with ableton im also making a song i will sing from it at the same time (after all drums and pianos are better than vocals). things work faster because you have more time to do things. i have used logic a few times when i had the money but there was no bass (i really had no budget for that back then). in time i found the costs were worth while, in the end i moved from a mate who blew it all in a car accident, to ableton in 2012. ableton has never given me the impression of a machine more made to make money than to make music.
