first we start the design process by creating the various blocks on the screen and clicking on them individually where we need, then click and drag the blocks to where we want them in the design. as a design grows, and the graphical possibilities become more and more limited, the editors can be pushed to their limits and beyond. but at the same time, we can extend our logical thinking beyond the limits of physical reality. as our imagination grows, so does our design, and the ultimate is imagination.

now that the garment is cut out, we can fit, stitch, draft and manage the fit in stitches and rows. this sub-program is where the real magic of the software comes into play. we can fit the garment in stitches and rows, add a new stitch or row for any change in the design, and even move parts around the garment that require it. all of this is done with the push of a few buttons. but it doesnt end there. i can also edit my stitch and row sizes either by using the software or through the software or even by looking up the relevant information on the internet at my leisure. the sizes that the software shows in the editor is just an indication of what the final size of the garment will be. like any calculation based on a shape, it is only a guideline.

once the file is exported and saved as a file, we can send it on to anyone we like, if we live within the realms of the internet. at the moment we are still within the realms of the internet. if we do not like the designs that are already out there, we can always tweak the design a little and submit our fresh design to the world. or not.

An easy-to-use online tool called Designaknit Graphics Studio allows for the conversion of any supported graphic file format (e.g..bmp,.jpg,.tif,.pdf,.eps,.psd, etc.) into a punch-card template for the purpose of creating sewing patterns for digitizing and machine knitting. Designaknit is a free tool to all commercial and personal use.
DesignaKnit 8, also known as DK8, DAK and the Pro, is a great piece of software that brings digital design capabilities to the small-scale knitter. Its price tag is not overwhelmingly high compared to other software of the same ilk, and its ability to interface directly with electronic knitting machines as well as create punchcard templates for mechanical machines makes it extremely versatile. Then of course there is its garment pattern drafting and shaping sub-programme, which takes all the pain out of those calculations. the software doesnt need a high end computer, it will run quite happily on older PCs, but not on Macs.
DesignaKnit 8 comes with a Factory Pattern for creating a knitting pattern using Pre-defined digital stitches and some graphics. DesignaKnit 9 is a pattern that is similar to the DesignaKnit 8 factory pattern, but with full stitch and pattern editing abilities and 2 new features.
