rassam did well at his studies. he did even better at making friends. he learned to ice skateand to even think it funny when he fell through the ice. he gave his new friends gifts of his own calligraphy, and he waxed proud when one of his examples was exhibited in the universitys bodleian library.

beginning in 1873, the two men undertook a campaign to bring many of the best pieces of art they had found to england. they used only a small part of the funds brought back from the field. the rest were invested, and after layards death in 1884, rassam was able to build up a strong portfolio of holdings. he sold off many of the pieces to raise money for his wife. the arabian nights, published in 1885, was based on translations of the thousand and one nights by the german scholar maxime du camp.

in addition to publications, rassam published about 20 articles on the excavations at nimrud, and on the antiquities in general. he wrote eight volumes, which were published in their entirety only after his death. he was never formally trained in art, but his writing, based on the sketches made by layard and his draftsmen, and on his own experiences and observations in the field, was admired, and became the standard in the field. the fine art he published in the arabian nights, about the art of the east, inspired artists and others to visit places like nuzi, hittite hattuša, and nineveh. other books were nimrud and calah, the ancient assyrians, and early babylonian culture. the last is the most complete and best account of the excavations, describing the discovery and excavation of more than 50 major sites, and even including the excavations at the royal cemetery at ur.

among the objects rassam discovered on his return to the site in 1851 were long lists of names, the origins and destinations of cargoes, items of a more scientific nature, the lists of the gods worshipped by the assyrians, and tablets that recorded the rising and falling fortunes of the empire and the subsequent fate of its denizens.
these, together with more than 4,000 tablets, he sent to the british museum, and with them, and with his travels, came the first of the great assyrian discoveries. the early finds from his first two trips to koyunjik, the lion and bull from nimrud, the balawat from nineveh, the obelisk from nineveh, the cyrus cylinder from ctesiphon, and the famous epic of gilgamesh were all the work of rassam alone. the turquoise cylinder with its musical notes, the cyrus cylinder, which had been excavated by layard, was, at the time, in the times of london. it was rassam who sent the cylinder to the metropolitan museum of art in new york, where it would remain for over a century, the only thing excavated at nimrud to remain in private hands.
returning to al rassam al arabi, this remarkable story only begins to describe layard’s discoveries and rassam’s contributions. there were dozens of other sites, more than 20 museums, and hundreds of thousands of tablets and inscriptions to be explored. on the site, sikhs continued to live in tents and maintain the site as layard and rassam were working. around 1857, the british museum agreed to let rassam and layard handle the material and, by 1859, the museum had taken over the site. layard and rassam were married in 1854.
