The fourth film is not as good, but that’s not entirely the fault of the movie or Tran’s performance. There is a logic to its story and, like many Kirk movies, it certainly feels like it plays more with the idea of time travel than a literal depiction of one, but that doesn’t necessarily make it any less enjoyable. The effects are still very good here, with some of the best effects in any of the films in the series. Spock’s character development is not as strong here, and the other characters have a little bit more back story. As in the third film, the cinematography is a little underwhelmed at times, the writing is a little too rushed to be compelling, and the pacing is uneven, but even when they’re not going well, these aren’t show-killing issues.

Finally, we arrive at the animated feature that appears as a bonus on the home HDTV release. The design is absolutely beautiful and perfect for the movie, and as always, it’s animated to the point of being almost eye-popping, but the story is a little bit too thin. As always, the characters, while very appealing, are somewhat generic and that’s probably a bit too much of a drawback. The two good ideas here are the inclusion of classic characters (they’re actually fair-to-good, rather than the meh that you might have seen in some of the other animated features, and that’s thanks to the inclusion of some rather good voice actors), but Tran’s performance is really the only one that stands out.

One of the most appealing things about watching Star Trek is that, outside of a few minor continuity errors (like the shuttle which arrived on Sarek’s planet was the Columbia), there are not a lot of major continuity problems between the films. That’s certainly not always the case with other science fiction series, of course, but in this case, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise has been away from Earth for more than twenty-five years and it’s hard not to wonder just how many major things have changed in that time. Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan is one of those movies, as much as I enjoy it, that clearly deviates from the source material in certain major ways. For example, when we last saw Uhura in the film, she was the navigator aboard the U.S.S. Reliant, but she has been promoted to communications officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. This one in particular has made for a very different experience and though I think it’s the best of the four films, I do feel that it deviates too much from the source material to be considered canon. But, Khan is more or less canon, he’s the primary villain in almost every incarnation of Star Trek and the way he was written into the first film left me with a lot of fun things to talk about when it comes to the craftsmanship that was put into bringing the movie to life. Montalbens is still more than adequate as a villain, and he’s certainly more than adequate here as he embraces the character’s clear villainous nature. But, it’s still a bit of a stretch with regard to the source material and his performance doesn’t quite reach the level of others performances in these films (the only glaring exception to this is Bruce Greenwood’s Captain Kirk in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier).

The first in what was going to be a series of big budget films based on the TV series, this film is a real mixed bag. On one hand, it’s a pretty strong action movie with an intriguing villain in Ricardo Montalban, but it’s seriously lacking in comedy and balance. It starts out strong, laying the groundwork for a larger scope story that does bring the crew together to investigate a series of mishaps that are happening on a distant planet, but the film quickly jumps into a new set of problems with a much more ill-fitting resolution and overall storyline that feels much more like a vehicle for big action set pieces with the character’s more than anything else. The characters are all pretty flat, with the exceptions of Montalban and Shatner, who are both given decent enough material to work with but end up feeling small and played to the point where there’s little energy or emotion behind their characters. The acting is rather hit or miss but, as stated, Shatner is usually a really solid performer and it’s nice to see that he’s still pulling off a pretty strong performance here. While the script is fine at times, it’s pretty weak for the most part and makes for a really bland experience. The film also doesn’t seem to know what to do with any of its characters and unfortunately, that makes the movies rather unfocused and feels quite disjointed at times. The visual effects work is okay, but nothing special here. The film is missing the comedic elements that were sorely missing in the first film and could have made for a much better story. None of this is really a bad thing, it’s just a real mixed bag that is quite a bit below the filmmakers’ higher profile works. It’s the sequel to a great film and a better film than the disappointing first one, but that doesn’t make it any more interesting. The film’s re-release on the disc probably makes it worth a look, but it’s a difficult film to find on Blu-ray outside of the Warner Archives exclusive versions, and there’s likely a lot of pain to be gotten through before enjoying it.
