i have the same mbp with ssd.
i still used the appstore hs installer because i needed to install a different software and it was too big to put in applications. but it stopped working and now i can’t install the software because i have to do that and it is too big for me to copy to applications from that external disk, i don’t have another disk with enough space to copy it there. not to mention, i can’t even see the file when i search in the appstore. the size of the appstore version is 1.4gb, the size of the file i downloaded is just 1.1gb. i need to install sierra with the startosinstall converttoapfs no. if i do it won’t it harm my boot? i am afraid to do it.
the version of sierra you are talking about is 13.0.1. it might have been better to mention that. and you are right, it can’t harm your boot. you can do a terminal session while holding down the option key. or while holding down the option key and the alt key, hold down the shift key. it will cause the install to start downloading again, but not as fast as when you first downloaded the installer from the app store.

terminal command so i downloaded the hs file again from appstore: it stopped at 400kb. i tried again while holding the shift key then while holding the alt/option key: no difference. then i let it for 20 minutes and see: it slowly began to download more, then more and after 10 minutes the installer file was 5.2gb! i stopped the install then copied the file to the external disk without compression. then took away the.app from the name in getinfo and left it in the applications folder. i stay another while in sierra. until i have enough learned about apfs and possible compatibility issues with my other macs.
