you can start any of the three options you have available, either from the options dialog or from the eset safeonline portal. this last one has a small delay in getting you into the main eset. the real-time and online antivirus protection will work, but its the initial scan that takes a little while. in this case ive chosen to run eset nod32’s full antivirus system. (the antivirus is still enabled in the wizard, so the system only runs the full scan when you pick that option.)

the scan and clean button does exactly what it says, though it adds another button that makes it somewhat less obvious. in both cases eset’s antivirus is enabled. as you can see on the screen shot above, the detection rate for a full scan is good, and the rate for a clean scan is poor. if you see an alert message like this, it’s either a false-positive, or a potential problem. you can double-click on the message to get more details.

the second thing youll notice is the blue e-mail shield, which looks like an added security feature. it’s intended to stop you from clicking the e-mail button on the eset safeonline portal, or from opening the e-mail section of the browser’s e-mail address box. you can either turn it off, or use it to mark up the e-mail shield icon, and only have it appear on things you want to stop from opening. the e-mail shield is based on the blacklist and whitelist options in the options dialog, though you can also add your own contacts.

as for the traditional antivirus component, you can see in the image below that it comes as an installer package that you run on your pc, where it will create a user profile in the c:\windows\temp folder. the default account will be used for virus scanning and the second profile for the real-time component. of course, you can edit this and create two additional user accounts for the same purpose if you wish. this is also where you will install the web browser add-ons.

eset smart security premium does a competent job of scanning both active and inactive email accounts. the product doesnt alert you to spam so much as to potential phishing and malicious websites, which may be a problem if youre a heavy user of these services. chrome, firefox, and edge count on the browsers built-in phishing detection systems to catch frauds rather than try to persuade you to do manual man-in-the-middle attacks to trick them into thinking youre something else.
