The author discusses about the studies on the availability of inorganic phosphorous from soil solution in a more detailed manner; soil solution, fertilizer, and microorganisms are the main sources of phosphorous for the plant. Apart from this the author also details about the soil phosphorus available to plants i.e., mineral and labile phosphorus and their relation to soil phosphorus losses. The author also presents various sources of phosphorus in soils. The mineral phosphorus can be referred to as inorganic or organic phosphorus present in soil in the form of solubilised and not solubilised forms (Beik et al. 2000). Mineral phosphorus can be converted from inorganic phosphorus at higher pH value and can be effectively used in the form of F-P fertilizer, whereas phosphatic sand, Fe-oxide, and Ca-oxide are the sources of organic phosphorus. The labile phosphorus is the source of inorganic phosphate in soil solution and it is formed by reaction of organic phosphorus with Fe-hydroxide and Al-hydroxide present in soils (Rajindar and Yu 1987).
The inorganic phosphorus in soil is in the insoluble forms and they cannot be utilized by plant, whereas the organic phosphorus is less in number but, it is highly soluble and available for the plant. Inorganic phosphorus i.e., phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and phosphate (PO43-), usually becomes unavailable for plant uptake because of the formation of insoluble phosphorus with Al and Ca present in soil, thus lowering the phosphorus bioavailability (Macias et al. 2003 ; Barroso et al. 2006 ). Minerals like aluminium and calcium release phosphorus from soil because they form insoluble phosphorus and lower the availability of phosphorus for plant uptake.
