Unlike most Tamsoft games, which have narrative design that is reminiscent of Calvin & Hobbes or the likes of Yuuna & The Haunted Hot Springs, Natsuiro High School feels more like a series of sketches or ongoing jokes in a single ongoing gag. Theres small moments that could play out a little different, but its more of a sincere sense of humour than one that seeks to exploit the humour of its players. Its the kind of game where some levels are slightly more fun than others. Stuff with monsters is genuinely scary, but it also allows for a lot of humorous hiding. There are plenty of mini games in the game, but they all just sort of sit there as a memory of ‘this is the game you play when youre bored’, but arent as fun as you would hope. Theyre too simple, and the rhythm felt like it just shouldnt exist in the game. The highlight is the card battle system, where a deck of cards will randomly be mixed with your hands. Theres a rhythm to this, which is really fun for a while, but then it abruptly breaks into a frustrating mess, which in this case is a combination of weird design choices that lead to odd results. Its only really fun when youre doing it with a friend, because the rhythm of looking at a 3 card deck and matching to it is very interesting on its own, but in a game like this, it doesnt really work very well.
I dont think its a bad game by any means, but I just felt like I could do a lot better with some much more effort. I probably should have taken an hour or two and drawn out the design a bit more, rather than tapping into 6 months of dedicated work. Its a big shame, because in most cases, Tamsoft is a game studio that makes so much effort for such little returns. But with Natsuiro High School, they really seem to be putting the same amount of work into it.
