following on from the self-cleaning tests, the working group also considered the actual procedure for measuring the capacity. they emphasized that there is no standard procedure for measuring the value of insulation capacity, especially if self-cleaning is a relevant parameter. nippon electric corporation (nec) has developed a method that is based on the drop in value of the insulation material, induced by the self-cleaning action. it is based on measuring the insulation capacity as the drop in the insulation material that has occurred during self-cleaning operation. the method is only applicable to mineral insulation material (e.g. ceramics and glasses) and it can therefore not be applied to polymeric insulators. the method is also based on the drop in the capacity for single insulation material, while in the case of a multilayered insulation product, it must be assumed that the drop in insulation capacity of the insulation material is proportional to the drop in insulation capacity of the insulation material that is at the surface. the nec test method is described in detail in nec technical bulletin ab05, and allows designing a system with a specified self-cleaning time and also testing whether the self-cleaning time meets the desired criteria. the method described in nec technical bulletin ab05 is a statistical approach, i.e. the data collected during the self-cleaning test is analyzed statistically to determine self-cleaning time.
additionally, the working group had some comments about the performance of insulators which include: insulation materials should allow reliable and accurate measurement of esdd and nsdd. the methodology for measuring esdd and nsdd is based on the relationship between the amount of self-cleaning-induced voltage drop and the self-cleaning time. self-cleaning-induced voltage drop should be measured according to the iec tc36/sc16/tg16 using an appropriate test method as described above. in order to identify and quantify environmental degradation effects on the service life of insulators, the working group considered self-cleaning tests under fixed environmental conditions, as opposed to field test conditions. to perform reliable tests, the conditions under which the self-cleaning tests are performed should be closely controlled. the working group also considered the capacity measurement of self-cleaning insulators. according to nec ab05, the value of insulation capacity, i.e.
