the best of the old-school reality competition shows, so you think you can dance, remains a strong performer, and the choreography, which has consistently been the most widely recognized aspect of the show, is impressive. every contestant has a different style, and while the top winner, and second-place finisher, are obvious the five remaining finalists are varied, and there is, perhaps, a surprising deviation from the norm.
because this show had been filmed in los angeles (as opposed to new york), the choreography, score and costumes are much more los angeles-centric, the production design is streamlined, and while the dancers and singers are very good, their styles are perhaps too reminiscent of the west coast’s tendency to be over-the-top, and the choreography is predictable.
the 30 minute performance was a raunchy take on judy garland’s iconic concert on the cbs special that first aired in 1955. lisa bianco created a lavish set with period-accurate costumes and props that highlighted the music’s playful pop feel. but it was bianco’s performance of a number of garland hits, such as “get happy”, “over the rainbow” and “i’ve got the world on a string” that proved that it was her turn to shine. and margot robbie gave lisa bianco’s performance life.
philip had a big moment when he recorded the beginnings of a song but couldn’t finish it and he was feeling a little bummed out. in a sweet moment, lisa confides to him that she can’t finish a song, that she has stage fright, so he goes to a local piano bar, buys her some wine, and helps her out. the song is called “heart shaped box” and later rupaul sings a little off-key over the jazzy beat. it was a brilliantly funny moment and we wouldn’t have seen it if ru had not stumbled upon it by luck. rupaul too delivered that song with an excellent performance, as did a few others.
