Paul Thomas Anderson’s first movie was a throwaway exploitation comedy. In Hard Eight, Joe Baca (John C. Reilly) attempts to bring his enemies to justice, but only finds himself entangled in a criminal underworld. Its a real low-budget, white-knuckle comedy, that has the kind of clarity and relentlessness that has since become the director’s trademark. So if youre an independent film buff who also enjoys a weird drug movie at the same time, you’ll really enjoy this one.
If this was made in a serious genre then this should have been a masterpiece; however, with this type of production it is all about the money and this was not made with the passion or care that should have gone into a film which is based on a real and horrifying event. There is little glamor, no dialogue, nor characters who you can care for and this is a film for a time when horror movies would have been much better than this.
What started out as an experiment by a teenager who was tired of her usual boring nightly activity of watching tv has become a huge event.
