we’ve been waiting for the final installment of jennifer lawrence’s hunger games trilogy for nearly two years now. and now that we finally have it in our hands, we’ve got a whole lot to talk about. can it live up to the hype? will it make up for what we’ve all been missing? as a fan of the books, i’m eager to find out.

the plot in a galaxy far, far away, a war between two powerful factions rages. on the planet of panem, district 12 has fallen to a brutal despot. the victorious president has forced the countrys people to enter the hunger games, a gruesome event in which 24 teens are pitted against one another in a battle to the death. if they win, they live; if they lose, they die. the capitol, on the other hand, remains untouched by the war. district 12s rebellion is still a mystery to the capitol, and katniss everdeen, a farmer’s daughter who is the most talented female tribute, is their best hope of discovering the culprit behind the uprising.

the series has continued to gain a following over the years, and the hunger games 2013 is looking to add to that growing list of fans. it’s not just katniss this time around; we also get to see a new character, the sweet, toothy haymitch abernathy (woody harrelson), whose one saving grace is that he understands what it means to be a true friend. he’s a veteran of the games, and he knows what it’s like to be a contestant and how it effects everyone involved. he’s a mentor, not a father figure; haymitch knows what it means to be heartless to a child, he knows what it means to be heartless to yourself. his character is one of the few constants in the series, and is a great introduction to this new world and this new generation of tributes.
