i ran this binary through the htb auditing tool, and it was flagged for flags. that flagging was not actually useful, since the app simply displays the flag information in the helpdesk panel. but i did notice that the password is put in the app data directory which is loaded into memory. i was able to dump the password using process monitor and a heap spray tool.
lacrosse is one of the most recommended flags at htb. it does not require any interaction with the user, and i only cracked the currentuser password. i created a basic ui and detected the password in memory.
i wanted to see if cracklook would work, and it was actually quite successful! i did this on uac, but this crack would work for windows 10 anniversary edition as well. i compiled it for x64, and it was pretty simple. i used it to find the currentuser password, but i also dropped a kernel shell.
at this point, i have a shell, and i can move on to next compromise. i start by searching for the flag location, and i see two files in the application folder. i know that the flag is in the.config directory, and it is also in the wglog file.
the first file i search for is the wglog file. i wanted to look for a bug and see if i could exploit it, and i found several interesting ones. the first bug is a null pointer dereference issue in an x86 instruction. i was able to check for the use of x86 instructions and then quickly jump to a gadget. the next gadget is the file location, and i can check for regular files, directories, etc. i use a simple static pattern to check for the flag. it was a good application of drive-by, and eventually, i found a file containing the flag.
