the decision to not adapt catching fire into a straight-up sequel is also commendable. though the script is admittedly a little rough, and the film is often bogged down by a preponderance of exposition, the ending of catching fire (which i cannot reveal because the film has not yet been released) is far superior to the twist ending of the hunger games. we learn in catching fire that the 75th games are held to celebrate the 75th anniversary of panem, and thus we learn why katniss is so eager to go back into the arena. this is a far more satisfying conclusion than the twist ending of the hunger games. the other main point of catching fire is that the decisions of victors no longer matter. katniss realizes at the end of catching fire that while she has been a force for good in her life, the games have largely been a force for evil. katniss is in no way a moral paragon, and it was actually her participation in the games that first made her a force for good in the story. she has trained her entire life to fight and die in the arena, but as she learns in the course of catching fire, she is no longer capable of killing, and thus is no longer forced to participate.
all of this makes catching fire a rather disjointed film. it begins with katniss auditioning for a role in the school play and ends with her in the capitol preparing for the final hunger games. the film is also not so much about katniss as a character as it is about the redemption of her family. this redemption is symbolized by katniss’s relationship with peeta, and how his love for her makes him realize the error of his ways. the film is also a personal redemption story for katniss, as she learns that it is not her bloodlust or her love for peeta that has made her dangerous to the capitol, but rather it is her selflessness and compassion that have enabled her to survive.
