I would definitely say that this was the most underrated album from the three. It is without any questions the most original and enjoyable album from this trio and it has a poetic structure with the vocal parts coming after the instruments, the bass intro are so rich it allows for the voice to become a vital part in creating the sound. This is a more polished presentation of the quartet, though one from a different time. In many ways it is a snapshot in time of the group at a transitional period, where jazz giants like Bill Evans or Charlie Parker were still at the top of the field, and players like Herbie Mann or Gil Evans or Dave Holland were beginning to emerge as the next generation. This recording on the other hand reminds me of old RCA Columbia recordings from the 1950s. If you buy this album, don’t pass it by in the hope that it is fuller, more natural sounding. This is a very well produced album with all the pieces performed at their best. This recording must have been almost a lab creation in which the players spent as much time putting the chemistry of the albums onto tape as they did on the stage. As this album is obviously close to the original sessions and perfect condition, it is also the ideal first step into the world of this unique group. That rarity in jazz, a group who were so innovatively creative that they have stood the test of time, so masterful were their performances. They are a window into a mysterious era when the most brilliant of American jazz was being created. (KS)
The Bee Gees were the most potent international pop act of the 1970s and because they were so successful and marketable they overshadowed their achievements in jazz. It was natural that they became the first international pop group to use a predominantly instrumental lineup of their recording studio band. The value of what they achieved in the ’90s on this studio album is found in the delicate string sound in the arrangement of Joe McPhee (vocals, mandolin) and a quiet intensity to the lyricism and instrumental sound that is so vulnerable it may break your heart, only reinforced by the magical lead guitar on songs such as Do you Know How I Feel.
