the internet has had a profound effect on people’s ability to create media. with the accessibility of the internet, anyone can create and publish online content. the wide accessibility of the internet can be a good thing. for example, creative production is able to spread freely and instantly across the globe, which helps to improve the quality of media production. however, with this freedom of creativity comes a problem. anonymity allows users to spread inaccurate or malicious content. they can hide behind the digital screen, using keyboard strokes to spread falsehoods. as the digital technology becomes more accessible, people are more likely to spread false or misleading information. for instance, online discussion forums that are based on anonymity allow people to post comments without having to worry about repercussions. as a result, people are more likely to post statements that are not based on truth, than they are to give up privacy and be accountable for what they say.
“the internet has democratized information and so people can now get their news from anyone.” (barreto, 2018, p.3) this can be good, as people can get news from people they trust or like. but with the ease of new media comes a problem. if you want to get a particular viewpoint, you can go online and read a particular news source or blog. you can also go to a forum or social media site to get your views heard. but if you do not like the results, you are stuck, as you are not able to change your news or blog providers. as a result, news that you do not like is very easy to spread. people can go to a website that will not show their name or address, and simply post what they want, without any accountability. people are thus more likely to post to online news sites that do not reflect their viewpoints. as a result, people will only see what they want to see.
