we are told later in the novel that the count’s mother was a proud woman. she is referred to by her husband, general dantes, as the victim of a cowardly seducer, who, by means of the pretext of the female sex, had not only gained over her virtue but her purse as well. this coward, this rake, this libertine, was the count.
