The last weekend in April was my first official ski weekend in Colorado. I learned a few lessons and had an amazing time, and because of that, I’ve never been as into skiing as I am now.

I say this with the confidence of someone who’s been up the runs with poles on his feet and a glove on his hands, experiencing what it means to truly dig into the earth and just let go, trust that what you’re doing is right, and just go for it. And it’s this kind of experience that I’ve found most likely to motivate my psyche as I start my year of lessons next week.

My arrival was met with a bluebird weekend, sunny and crisp. I skied with new friends and we hit the slopes together. We hiked up to the ski chalet and took a leisurely dip in the indoor pool and hot tub. After lunch at the main lodge we explored some of the trails out the back, where we had to step over a frozen creek. Then there was ice cream on the fire escape and a view of the mountains and valley below that was just too beautiful. We sat down by the fire and had some wine (thanks to Mark).

We returned to the chalet for an après ski dinner at the main lodge. A band played live music and good food was served. I drank too much wine and danced (part of the reason I’m starting lessons again is because my liver is large and my hangovers are frequent) and now that I’m sober and rested, I think it’s time to start my lessons.
