Erlang OTP is a distributed concurrency/distributed computing environment based on the actor model and the message passing paradigm. It allows the programmer to treat concurrent processes and distributed Erlang applications as a black box.
The Erlang OTP includes tools and modules for distributed computing and application development:

Behavioral programming is a style of object-oriented programming in which the objects are described in terms of operations or messages, not in terms of static data structures.
At the same time, behavioral programming is based on the traditional principles of object-oriented programming, such as encapsulation and inheritance. But it goes beyond that by defining the properties of the objects themselves as methods.
Continuations are control flows that allow software to “return” from a method back to the point where the method was called. They can be used to execute a subroutine, a “big” function that might do many things internally, with different data structures and before returning back to the parent program.
In other words, when working with Erlang, you have the ability to send and receive messages from any process without worrying about where the code is physically located, as long as you know the IP addresses of the processes where you want to send messages to or receive messages from.
Actor Model and Communicating Sequential Processes
Communicating Sequential Processes, or CSP, is a probabilistic data-flow model based on the idea that programs are composed of simple, self-contained pieces of code, which execute sequentially, but communicate by message passing.
While Erlang is a concurrent system, as it uses its own language and processes, it is based on this model.
In the CSP model, a process is a sequential machine that receives input, performs some computation, and sends output.
In Erlang, processes are homogeneous. That is, they are all represented by the same abstract data type, the process. The only difference is in the way they behave: Some processes are simple, others are complex, and some may be involved in long-running computations.
You can send a message to any Erlang process, regardless of its type. It’s worth highlighting the fact that this protocol has been developed and refined since its introduction back in 1988.
