You Need to Read This: A Clear Case for Control Theory

Control Theory is a simple, tested economic theory, that provides insight into common HR concerns. Control Theory can help you develop an employee engagement strategy. One of the most significant and foundational components of an employee engagement strategy is leadership effectiveness. Good leadership is an integral component for an engaged workforce. Here are three ways to approach leadership in the context of Control Theory.
Distinguish the two types of leadership. The first type is the element of control, which relates to the ability of a leader to make decisions. This is the leader’s ability to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and to maintain consistency throughout your organization. The second type of leadership, the element of relationship, relates to the ability of a leader to connect with his or her employees and make them feel valued.
Many times leaders are rated on their level of control. When they exceed a certain standard, they become “out of control.” Control theory has found that the relationship component of leadership is what makes the difference between “doing well” and “doing great.” If you focus only on the first element of leadership, you cannot expect to gain the benefits of the other.
A common misconception is to view leadership as being one-way. This misconception comes from the fact that the other studies that focused on the relationship part of leadership found that if a leader’s concern for his or her subordinates was high, they were more effective than if they had not cared. Being concerned about their subordinates made the leaders more likely to give positive feedback, to help his or her subordinates in difficult situations, and to offer them assistance when they were having a problem. Similarly, if a leader is open, gets to know and take an interest in his or her subordinates, the subordinates will be more open to engage in that leader.
If you are having trouble hiring top talent, consider Control Theory and leadership. Most professionals work for a firm for 10 years, and an employer can have a positive impact on these professionals by creating a more engaging workplace. The leader can engage in the other element of leadership and develop a relationship with his or her employees.
