When do we need to use an ActiveX-control or a Web-Service?

First of all, this might be not the most appropriate place to ask this question, but I couldn’t find another Stack-Exchange-site, where this question could be on topic.
So here is my question:
Is it an acceptable use-case, to send live values via ajax calls to a web-service, which returns a simple json-string, or should we use a WinForm ActiveX-control, instead?

Any answer is going to be opinion based and there are no black and white answers. I will give my opinion that the 2 are similar but serve different purposes.
A WinForm ActiveX control is a completely different programming paradigm than a REST web service. The key difference is that the WebService is stateless and the ActiveX control is stateful.
If you are thinking of doing the 2 in the same manner, then think again.
The purpose of the web service would be to provide something that can be reused and shared by different clients. This is the purpose of a RESTful service.
If you are thinking of the web service like a push notification system, then I think that it is a misuse of a web service. Push notification is usually limited to a set of devices or users (or people). A web service should not provide a one to many relationship.
Consider that there are other ways to push data to the client. These other ways are doing the right thing for the client in the sense that the client is actually receiving the data from the server and not in some way getting the data from the client itself.
Ajax is one of the best ways to update a web page with data in a way that a user does not perceive any kind of delay. In this sense, the web service is providing the data that the client needs without any perception of delay.
Ajax is often used as a poor man’s web service. Why? Because ajax has been around for a long time and thus is not
