The open-source nature of GPU rendering has become a crucial component of recent graphics API advancements — in particular, OpenGL and OpenGL ES (ES 2.0 in this release). Adobe is no exception in the use of OpenGL ES to leverage GPU acceleration even when rendering content in the browser. This continues to be the case for vector layers, gradient meshes, Clipping Grids and many other fundamental 2D graphics features that continue to be available in the Legacy APIs. However, we are refactoring some of these features to leverage the native Metal APIs to achieve better performance in high-end graphics content.

As always, we recommend everyone migrate their existing content to the open-source Vulkan API for the Linux and Mac operating systems. For the Windows operating system, we still recommend using the DirectX 11 API, but we also encourage our users to migrate to OpenGL. And for Windows users, we encourage them to use OpenGL not least because of the Windows 10 environment, which is the only Windows desktop that fully supports OpenGL ES 2.0.

Finally, please note that we will be deprecating the Windows 8.1 OS as the default operating system for new installations in 2019. You may still continue to use Windows 8.1 on your existing systems; however, it is important you ensure that you are using an up-to-date version of Windows 10 that supports OpenGL 2.0.
