Autodesk first developed AutoCAD to allow engineers to create and publish technical drawings for large companies, universities, government agencies, and research and development (R&D) companies. By the time AutoCAD was introduced, the company already had its own drawing software called Autodesk Dimension. Autodesk launched Autodesk Dimension in 1980. AutoCAD was launched as a desktop application and gained popularity when it was introduced to a wider market. Autodesk introduced AutoCAD for PC-based drawing and drafting (handwritten drafting was supported on a separate, later version of AutoCAD called AutoCAD Drafting). Also, AutoCAD and AutoCAD Drafting are among the most popular applications for the Windows operating system. In 1990, Autodesk began developing software for CAD-capable tablet computers. In 2001, Autodesk released AutoCAD Electronic Drafting (AutoCAD ED) for personal computers. AutoCAD ED, based on AutoCAD Drafting, introduced the ability to create electronic drawings. In 2004, Autodesk released a web-based version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD Web. AutoCAD Web was a single platform for both desktop and web-based applications. Autodesk released AutoCAD Topo for 2D vector drawing on iPad in February 2011. In 2012, Autodesk released AutoCAD Civil 3D, a new 3D modeling and architectural design application. The company also acquired two other companies: Enovia in 2014, which develops mobile and web-based 2D drafting and architectural design software, and Orca3D, which develops 3D modeler software.
In 2016, Autodesk acquired Allegro Systems, which develops 3D modelling software and cloud-based rendering and video production services. Autodesk acquired the company for $340 million.

The word AutoCAD is a portmanteau, combining the first two letters of AutoCAD Drafting (Autodesk Dimension) and Autodesk (Autodesk for AutoCAD).

Commercial AutoCAD APIs and the AutoCAD Exchange Apps
In 2010, Autodesk announced a new set of AutoCAD APIs and a new platform for third-party AutoCAD plug-ins called the AutoCAD Exchange Apps. The AutoCAD Exchange Apps were provided to registered developers for free, and were not available to the general public. Registered developers had access to APIs, documentation, samples, and tools to develop and customize AutoCAD Exchange apps.
When the Autodesk Exchange Apps were discontinued on August 31, 2017, Autodesk claimed that the primary benefit of the Exchange Apps was the close relationship between AutoCAD Exchange Apps and AutoCAD. In practice, the AutoCAD Exchange Apps provided access to a small, growing number of available AutoCAD add-ons.
As of September 1, 2017, Autodesk no longer supports the Autodesk Exchange Apps. There is no official statement regarding the end of the Exchange Apps.
There is also a non-Autodesk version of the Exchange App available that does not require the registration. It is free to use for download and testing but has limitations on what can be done in the app.
