Photoshop CC 2017 is a big update (it is Annual) and is the next version available to Creative Cloud subscribers to download for free. I was thinking about testing it as a Beta version when it first came out on the mobile devices but it wasn’t available when I did my review of Lightroom Mobile. (FYI, some of the issues I mention below likely relate to Lightroom CC.) Just as with Lightroom CC, it is capable of processing RAW and JPEG images. Of course, I have a lot of experience using the final release of Adobe’s RAW converter on my desktop, but I wanted to get a review out in the JavaScript-powered cloud soon.

Is Photoshop CC 2017 better than the previous version? I’d say it’s better in most areas. The interface is still the same, but I appreciate the simplicity. As I mentioned in my review of Lightroom Mobile, I like the simplicity and it’s easy to learn tools.

I’m familiar with the tool suite and feel that moving graphics around in Photoshop happens quickly and more intuitive as before. Lightroom on the other hand, was a struggle for me. I knew how to do certain things but it took time to learn where and how to use the sliders.

I’ll start by saying that I’ve been concerned about Lightroom 5.0 for some time now, ever since version 4.2. If you have an original Creative Suite, you’ll have noticed that Lightroom constantly requires updates to this version, many of which are just bug or minor feature fixes. Lightroom 5.0 is a big change for many, from the UI, to the look of thumbnails, to the changes to the controls and collections. I was concerned that the changes would be so drastic that I wouldn’t use Lightroom at all. Luckily, though, the changes aren’t too out of the ordinary. I’ve used Lightroom for years now, and I don’t have any problem getting over the performance issues, but I was concerned that the changes for v5 wouldn’t feel at home for people that were already familiar with Lightroom.
