This document describes the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) version 2 configuration and MTP
PAD application programming interface, and the Microsoft ActiveSync (MS-AS) specification,
which extends the MTP protocol to support smart devices.
This technology has been ported to create a high-performance USB and SMB (Server Message Block)
implementation that emulates the functionality of a physical storage device. However, it is a protocol
that can be used without a physical connection.
The protocol is implemented in the OS libraries as well as in a user client application.
The protocol is described in MTP Version 2, Supplement 1, which is now a part of
the Bluetooth stack specification.
Configuration and MTP PAD
The configuration settings of the MTP peer device depend on the driver in use, but also on the
implementation, supporting different devices on different platforms and vendors.
The configuration specification (part of the MTP protocol version 2) contains the following
extensions to the MTP version 1 specification:
MTP-PROFILE:
This extension allows the MTP protocol to give the ability to select the profile to be used
with it, whether it is bluetooth or MTP.
MTP-REMOTE-ACCESS:
This extension introduces a new attribute to the MediaServiceRequestClass record.
This new attribute will allow applications to request the device to accept incoming connections from
remote devices.
MTP-TUNNEL-KEEP-ALIVE:
This extension allows the peer device to send a keep alive packet every so often to the peer
device, to send messages if no traffic is exchanged for a period of time.
MTP-STANDARD:
This extension introduces the ability for the device to exchange the device name in the
MediaServiceRequest Class as well as the Vendor ID in the MediaServiceResponse class.
This parameter allows the peer device to inform the application that the MediaServiceRequest class
has changed to the MediaServiceResponse class.
Security considerations
The MTP protocol and its extensions provide security by using the UMTS MTCH profiles, which
follows RFCs 2917 to 2919.
