History
AutoCAD is an acronym for Auto-Cad Electronic Drafting System. AutoCAD was originally developed by Autodesk in 1982 and is primarily used for designing and drafting architectural, mechanical and electrical structures. AutoCAD first appeared on the PC desktop as an application called AutoCAD-DV in 1982. The first release of AutoCAD was version 1.0 in November 1982. The original version of AutoCAD was not a real-time CAD program. It was a postscript (PS) file that would be interpreted by the AutoCAD R-11 or R-16 graphics adapter card installed in a commercially available microcomputer with an internal graphics controller.
Autodesk acquired the rights to AutoCAD from Softcraft in 1989. In 1990, AutoCAD was rewritten as a native Windows application for the first time. The next major development milestone was the release of AutoCAD 2000 in 1994. The current version is AutoCAD LT.
Most AutoCAD versions are marketed as CAD/CAM software that allows users to create 2D drawings for commercial and non-commercial purposes.
Overview
AutoCAD is a solid modelling CAD software program. It provides the user with the ability to construct three-dimensional (3D) models, which are then converted into 2D drawings, similar to other commercial CAD programs such as VectorWorks and SolidWorks. The user can work on the model in real time and choose to use the Drafting component or the DFM (Design for Manufacture) component.

However, when a door is unlocked, other aspects of the door, such as the door frame and door head, can be modified. In the case of a door, unlocking may also have implications for lock functionality.
The 3D workspace is no longer considered a separate product but has been integrated into the product suite. The 3D desktop is only available to registered users of AutoCAD.
Before AutoCAD 2012, 3D objects could be either 3D objects or a combination of 2D and 3D drawings. With AutoCAD 2012, the only 3D objects are 3D views and 3D solids. The 2D drawing workspace remains the same.

The advantages of this version is that no installation of Autocad (which is already installed) is needed (this is the first time Autocad is needed) and it is more easy to update the program (in my case the Autocad Designer and not only Autocad).

You can download a trial version from the Autodesk website. Just search “Autocad Trial Edition” and find the link.
I personally think that you’re right to use the free version. I am not an Autodesk employee, but I do have their software, and I use both the 2017 and 2019 trial versions of Autocad. The Autocad 2017 trial is a pretty good trial, but the 2019 trial is more robust. I can do more with the 2019 than I can with the 2017. I can’t speak to the Autocad Designer or Architect.
A few other tips:
If you have a newer computer, get the “student” edition. I don’t think it’s possible to “upgrade” a license. At least not without a significant investment of time and money.
Don’t use the “official” Autodesk version of Autocad. As I mentioned above, the “official” versions are not that good. Use the “student” version instead. There may be new features and bug fixes in the 2017 version that the official version does not have.
