On March 27, 2K Games and Team 17 announced that the cult hit, pixelated 2D action adventure, “Frontier: A New Frontier” is coming to iOS, iPod touch, iPad and Android devices.
The game, which has sold nearly 6 million copies since its original release in 2001, is currently available on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Steam. On March 27, 2014, the game’s World Tour mode will be available on iOS and Android.
In “Frontier,” players take control of a wisecracking alien named Meld and his sidekick Link, as they try to find a way back home after they’ve been captured and dropped into the middle of what appears to be an unexplored planet. There, they must go through a series of challenges in order to free themselves from a series of villains.
Players get up to three AI-controlled friends to assist them in their quest, taking cover behind walls and other objects as they battle off enemies. Players gain experience points that can be used to level up their characters and also purchase new items from an alien shop. In addition to traditional RPG gameplay, the game features a unique “plot system” that allows players to tackle challenges in any order they choose.
Players can also engage in “multiplayer” with real people, as well as “community mode,” which allows players to interact with each other on Xbox Live. An iOS edition will be available this spring.

“Frontier: A New Frontier” is developed by Team17, a team of passionate gamers that were once respected video game developers. Following the break-up of their former company Westone Games, the team had no games in development and were looking for new opportunities. The name “Frontier” came from one of Team17’s employees – JD McNeil (also known as the creator of the original “Frontier” series).

There are two things to consider when developing a game.
One thing is to work in a group. It is all well and good to have a lot of faith in a single person, but when it comes to finishing a game, a single person just doesn’t have the time. Two heads are always better than one (easier to get votes for ‘developer of the year’, too).
Another way to look at it is as money. If you want to make a game in a specific genre, it’s not worth it. The costs (development time, artwork, music,…) are not worth it. You have to decide whether you want to take that risk, or whether you want to be a niche developer.
