This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the periodontal healing of an orthodontic root displacement. Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: orthodontic, orthodontic with M-CSF, orthodontic with PRP, and sham. The rats were subjected to a force of 150 g for 7 days to induce root displacement. PRP was obtained from rat’s blood by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 10 min. M-CSF was injected every second day into the periodontal tissues that were affected by the orthodontic force. Following the 7-day orthodontic force, the root displacements were measured by performing periapical radiographs, histomorphometrical analysis, and immunohistochemical analysis. The root displacements were calculated using the following formula: [Formula: see text]. The root displacements were significantly lower in the M-CSF group compared to the orthodontic group. However, the root displacements were similar in the PRP group and the orthodontic group.
