AutoCAD Rev. added 3D features such as building, site, landscape, and room components, BIM, and the ability to import and manipulate AutoCAD architectural and mechanical drawings directly into other CAD programs and design software packages. AutoCAD Rev. provided a new way of drafting, rather than relying on the traditional drafting table, drafting table insert, drawing pad, drafting pen, and ruler. By freeing up the drafting table surface, and removing the need for standard drafting paper, AutoCAD Rev. provided the freedom of using more efficient drafting methods.

AutoCAD Rev. 2000 was the last major release of AutoCAD before it was acquired by Autodesk in 1998. The same year AutoCAD was acquired, Autodesk released Revit, a BIM-centric CAD design and documentation application aimed at creating 2D and 3D models of architectural designs and property construction.

The introduction of AutoCAD, and more recently of Revit, transformed architectural and mechanical design. Since the release of AutoCAD and Revit, architectural and mechanical design in the United States has been predominantly performed using CAD applications.

Additional information can be stored within the project file. AutoLISP, Visual LISP and VBA macros can be included. There can also be additional variable names and values.

The.prj file is only read and not writeable. A.xmp file can be used for storing other information, such as the version of the AutoCAD application.

Syntax
AutoCAD project files are sometimes confused with the AutoCAD.prj file. They are not the same file type. In AutoCAD the.prj file is read-only, whereas the.xmp is a variable-value file.
