Hi Eric, I looked up the sunfire x100z and it looks like it has USB 3.0 support. It also looks like it has SATA III support.
In general a SATA to USB 3.0 converter will not work well with a SATA III drive since they both need to use the same plug but it might work with a hybrid sata plug.
I would test to see if your HDD will work with the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports of the computer. If there is a standard SATA port on the computer, then you can use one of the converters listed on my thread.
I don’t think that any of these will allow it to support both USB 3.0 and SATA III, but it might be a little bit better than a USB 2.0 only cable or converter.
Hi James, I tried using the adapter you had and it did not work. I found a site that had an external drive with SATA 3.0 connections and I tested this SATA 3.0 Hard drive cable adapter
To be honest I did not test the USB 3.0 speeds, only 2.0. But my experience was that it made the speed of the drive essentially unusable. I could not get any reasonable transfer speeds even though it was PnP compatible and it had some of the same specifications as my old 3.0 cable HDD adapter.
This means that the USB 2.0 port of the computer and the USB 3.0 port of the adapter had to have the same power requirements. So I was using an adapter that was not capable of power to the adapter.
So for future reference it looks like the DVD drive is the only way to go for the usb 3.0 speeds with the adapter. But I have seen some other device on youtube that only has a usb 2.0 port. I could not find any that had a usb 3.0 port. But it is possible that they are available. It would be great if you can get a working device.
