The world of point-and-click mixers has come a long way over the years. It’s now common to have every kind of possible effect — like compressors, EQs, amps, delays, reverbs, synths, etc. — equipped with faders. But one area that is often overlooked is the reverb section. Good reverb doesn’t really have to be expensive. It just has to sound good. Emagic Logic is also there.

The 32-bit internal signal pathway ensures audio quality is maintained throughout. Additionally, the high-end POW r dithering process produces master-quality results. Logic supports almost unlimited MIDI tracks, with a timing accuracy of 1/3,840 of a single note. Logic Platinum has a wide variety of synchronization options that allow it to connect easily to both digital and analog worlds. Double-clicking on any region will bring up the main editing window, which has extensive editing capabilities. Audio regions can be edited in real-time during sequencer playback, even when performing destructive edits. Zooming down to the sample allows you to view the edit resolution. The region can also be viewed in bars/beats or SMPTE as well as samples and minutes/seconds increments.

If you have Logic or Cubase, you will need to upgrade to an early Leopard. Although the UI changes a bit from the previous version, you will find the new user experience easier than using Logic 4.8. The downside, however, is that Logic Control is not yet released. You can download a partially functional version from the Logic Web site. If you’re really into control, spend the extra cash and buy Logic Control XT.

As a huge fan of Analog Four, a wonderful inexpensive virtual synthesizer, I was very excited to hear that Analog Four 2.0 was released this month. The new version offers a number of enhancements, including an improved UI, expanded feature set, refined API, some new filters, plus performance and compatibility enhancements. However, I had to wait to try Analog Four 2.0 until I got a chance to run some new Native Instruments plug-ins, such as EMS Synthi A and the Wiintech free synth plug-in, SampleMath’s Harminator.

Update: An audio plug-in comparison between Native Instruments Komplete 8 and Emagic Logic 5 doesn’t show any significant differences in performances. But, one thing that I found interesting, when I was comparing both plug-ins, was the color scheme in the Arrange window. The Emagic Logic 5 track was much lighter than the Native Instruments Komplete 8 track.
MacOS 10.5.3. No longer compatible with OS X 10.5.2 or 10.5.1.C. Although not officially supported on any operating system, Emagic Logic Extreme (free) is a great plug-in for those OS X users who have been missing out on some of the useful features in Emagic’s Logic 5. At the moment, it is one of the best free plug-ins out there. To me, it is the perfect complement to Logic’s $79.99 native plug-in, PitchBend. With this plug-in, you’ll never have to calculate your own timing corrections or have to resort to Ping-Ponging bus stereo groups for delayed effects.
I consider Native Instruments Komplete 8 to be the best one-stop production powerhouse ever created by any developer. It is well worth it’s $125.00 price tag, especially since you can easily download and use some free plug-ins from Native Instruments. Perhaps the most interesting of those plug-ins is Komplete Backline. This free plug-in provides multiple sound banks and standard MIDI routes. If you like to do session work on your computer, or any other MIDI controller, Komplete Backline comes in handy. You’ll also appreciate that Komplete Backline allows you to record audio via your FireWire, USB, or SPDIF audio interface.
