i think the biggest misconception was the title of the movie. i wanted the title to be something that you could say to everyone and would leave them with a feeling of ‘maybe this isn’t as bad as i thought.’ the title of the first movie is the perfect place to start. i think that the first kingsman movie is something that everyone can enjoy. i always felt that the original kingsman movies had a very lighthearted vibe. this is an idea of a more serious kingsman movie and i feel that this is the best way to go about it. that way we can stay true to the spirit of the first movie and we can still make this the best version of that. you can always take a movie and add some humour to it. i think that’s what will happen with the golden circle. i like the idea of cracking the first kingsman movie apart into two parts. i wanted to make the sequel different from the first movie and i wanted it to be a standalone film – more than a direct sequel. it’s the first kingsman movie that we’ve seen in a long time where there’s no real connection to the first movie at all. there’s a lot of new villains, new situations, and a lot of great action scenes. in terms of content, there’s a lot of humour, a lot of humour in the last movie, but there’s a lot more to it than there was in the first movie. it’s all about that age that we’re in now, the feeling of the world around us. we’re not as fearful as we used to be. we have a responsibility to each other in the world. we have technology and we can work together – we have a chance to survive this all together. that sense of hope was something i think was lost with the first movie. i wanted to recapture that sense of humanity at the end of the day. it’s a little bit more hard-hitting. i think that the first movie has a lot of heart and it’s definitely something you can enjoy as a family. people who enjoy the first movie, they can get a lot of enjoyment out of this one. it takes things that the first movie had and builds on it. it’s the other movies that are based on the first one – the sequel and future movies – so it’s about building on something that’s already been established. and i think the world around us has been established in that first movie. so if you’re into comedy, that’s what you want. if you’re into action, thats what you want. the humour is built into both of them, but the thing is this is a standalone film. we can make a story that’s both a blockbuster action movie and a comedy. we can do both at the same time. we can do it with humour and also things that are darker and have a lot of soul. it’s not something that’s going to be for everyone.
