The paper addressed the interaction between multi-stakeholder issues in the management of complex socio-ecological systems. Management of complex systems is more than the issue of managing an individual, or group, of resources. In complex systems an individual has the ability to either achieve or not achieve some of the goals. The central problem in complex systems is that goals can be achieved or not, due to the systemic uncertainties and their interaction with the system of interest. The paper provided examples where the problem of complex systems can be effectively managed, within such a context, also through the organizational design and socio-ecological management. The managerial implications derived from the analysis of the capability of a socio-ecological system, and the different elements involved in its management, are also described.
It’s a good thing that the authors open the text by briefly introducing the overarching goal of this part of the course – to teach students about the economics of management and supervisory practices. Their impetus is to combine (and link) managerial economics with corporate ethics.
The topics covered are incredibly broad. The course is five classes, which means that I could have covered almost anything. It also goes through the different ways that economics is used in the real world and how it can be used in different ways. Through the course, I saw how some of these concepts are very similar, but approach them from different directions, and that’s good to see. You see the logic of the subject, but also the implications of different ways of looking at things. It provided a nice bridge for future coursework.
I always do three or four drafts before a class and then another three or four after. I’ll also have a few instances when I know that I’m going to be busy (meetings, vacations), and even those drafts will be conducted in the evenings. That being said, in no particular order the books have been: ‘Foundations of Microeconomics’, ‘Foundations of Macroeconomics’ and ‘Managerial Economics’ with a bit of ‘Monetary Economics’ in there as well. I’ve been using this book for several years now and it’s a great addition to my teaching material.
This book is for those wishing to delve into managerial economics. This is a challenging, but rewarding text. In the effort to simplify the material, this text uses the term ‘Economics’ to mean managerial economics. This is a clear understanding by the reader of the nature of the disciplines. The authors make it a point to compare managerial economics with’macroeconomics’, stating that they are different approaches to studying the same body of ideas. This is a theme throughout the book (in my opinion, a core concept that sets managerial economics apart from the traditional macroeconomic approach).
This is a must-have text for all students of microeconomics, and those looking to go beyond that. This is a beautiful text, with attention to detail. It is clear, concise, interesting, and accurate. If your class has been working through the texts, this can easily save you some time.
The book discusses the history of macroeconomics, starting with Keynes, Friedman and Lucas. In contrast to the book, I find Lucas a bit of a “chicken or egg” question, where he makes it a bit unclear who came first.
