Background to the struggle
There has been much talk recently about the right of workers to take over and run a business. Indeed the number of workers taking over the running of their own businesses, often called worker cooperatives, has increased greatly in the past few years, particularly in Italy.
Worker-owned and -managed businesses, or enterprises as they are called in Europe, represent an important development in the working-class movement for over a century. In the early part of that century the first enterprise in the UK to be democratically managed by its workers was the Potters Co-operative Society, founded in 1858. This led to the foundation of the Co-operative Guild in 1884 with over 40 member societies.
In the early years in the US, the first workers to take ownership of their own businesses were immigrants and workers of colour. The aforementioned Potters Co-operative Society, and the abolition of slavery, were the driving force behind the formation of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Wool, Lead and Tin Workers (the AAWLT) in 1892, and the Shop Stewards Movement, in 1895. The two earliest US strikes were over the running of their own businesses, an action taken to force the strike of garment workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1912. This led to the formation of the Industrial Workers of the World in 1915. The early years of the 20th Century saw the formation of many worker-owned and -managed businesses in the US and UK.
More recently, there have been a number of worker-owned and -managed enterprises in Europe, notably the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation in Spain, the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation in the Basque country and in Italy.
As the decades have passed there has been a shift to more and more worker-owned and -managed businesses in the US and UK. In the UK the number of worker-owned and -managed enterprises has increased from 1
