Lack of an A.I. policy for Mutant Mudds Super Challenge might be a deal breaker for some. That said, the few bosses you’ll face are surprisingly challenging, with some having tricks of their own. Beating every level on Hard difficulty unlocks the first secret level and it’s fair to say that this game is still difficult even with these tools at your disposal. At the end of each stage is a health gauge that fills up as time goes on but the health gauge is only a rough guide, and it’s up to the player to manage the power-ups and powers to keep the health gauge full for as long as possible. This in turn is effectively a measure of skill, as you can load up your save with extra power-ups as desired, but you can’t load it up so that you can do this indefinitely.
While there is a difficulty setting for the game, the primary difficulty is represented by the number of lives you have. The result is that all the levels from the original remain, and they’ve been expanded so they take longer to beat in order to give you more time to experiment and master the game. That being said, there are only three special lives, so you’ll still find yourself squandering your precious lives as you struggle in vain to get enough points to keep one open for the final level. On the plus side, the game really takes advantage of Nintendo’s eShop, and we have to give Renegade Kid credit here for their ability to launch their own Nintendo eShop-exclusive game and do it well. On top of that, they wisely don’t force the player to use the in-game credits to purchase new power-ups or anything like that. In addition to not having to feed your console’s microtransactions, the cost of extra lives is also further justified by the fact you can save your game to the 3DS and load it up on any Nintendo eShop-enabled device with a new (free) save downloaded to it instead.
