**Basic Gradient Tools**
Photoshop does not offer full-fledged gradient tools, but it does include a set of gradient tools that are generally adequate for the majority of the graphic design and layout types described in this book.
To create a gradient, choose **Create a new gradient tool** from the Gradient palette, as seen in figure 6-27, or click the Type tool and choose Gradient from the resulting drop-down menu.
When you place a gradient tool on a new layer, it will automatically fill the canvas area in a linear gradient from one color to another across all boundaries, transparent or opaque. The slider that appears in the Tool Options bar is scaled to the size of the canvas.
After placing the gradient tool on a new layer, create a color stop on the Tool Options bar with the same name as the gradient. Figure 6-27 shows a standard gradient that has three stops, or color stops, named Soft, Medium, and Hard.
When you select a color stop, the active color will fill the interior of the gradient, transitioning from the color at the stop position to the color at the beginning of the gradient.

To change the color stops for your gradient, click on the **Stop positions** radio button and then click the color stops in the Tool Options bar. This will change the colors at the color stops in your gradient. You can select multiple color stops for a gradient and select all of them to remove them all or select only one or two at once to copy one or two stops to another color stop of the gradient.
